The “southern rarities” continue at the Refuge this week with the discovery late in the day on 7/20 of a Wood stork!

The bird was seen at Knox Marcellus Marsh and a very early trip on 7/21 yielded the stork for me. The stork has been reported at Knox throughout the day (7/21) and hopefully will remain for a while. Viewing is distant and the stork often is foraging in heavy vegetation so a spotting scope and patience is advised. This bird, along with the continuing Roseate spoonbill (seen mainly around Tschache Pool or Mays Point and the river and canal there) have brought a “taste of Florida” to the Montezuma Complex!
