After careful assessment of initial, and follow-up, notes including bird or call descriptions, locations, and the number of team members who saw/heard the bird; the compilers of the Muckrace checklists have decided, and I concur, that the birds under review will be approved on the Hobart William Smith-Thrashers checklist. One special bird of note is a Lark Sparrow seen in a field off Rt. 89 north of East rd. and seen by all members of the team! Lark sparrow is a new bird for the Muckrace, great find HWS team! Congratulations to the Thrashers for tallying 135 species, the most in the Competitive category, and overall.

We’d like to request that in future years, if any team finds a rare bird to please share as promptly as possible through an eBird report or another alert system. While the Muckrace is a competition, it is a friendly one, and sharing sightings of rare birds will allow many people an opportunity to share in the enjoyment. If you don’t use eBird or aren’t part of an alert system I will make my cell number known and you can call or text me. Even if you do use eBird or another system, please share your findings with any fellow birders you happen to run into during the Muckrace. Word generally spreads quickly among the birding community!
