We surveyed Tschache and May’s Point Pools yesterday.  Both units have high water so we didn’t have many great blues and no egrets. As a matter of fact most of the great blues were on the dikes so I think they were hunting frogs. For several weeks whenever I am out of the vehicle on the dikes the frogs (and there are many) are jumping out of the way!! I must have big scary feet, at least to a frog!

We had lots of ducks flying around at Tschache.  Just like on the Main Pool and May’s Point the ducks are out in the vegetation.  Water levels are quite high in those units. Large areas of those units have water that is above the base of the vegetation. That allows the ducks to freely swim through without being hindered by clumps of cattails and other vegetation.

The water level is down enough at Seneca Flats (the unit north of Larue’s Lagoon), so there were a lot of shorebirds and egrets on Monday and Tuesday. There were dowitchers, least, semipalmated, stilt and solitary sandpipers, and lots of ducks.  We looked for the willets and the ibis that have been reported, but didn’t see them.

Early Monday before I opened the VC, Knox had the usual mix of birds, except the spoonbill.  I searched and searched but couldn’t find it.  I suspect if it is still around, it is over in Puddler just behind the dike so we are unable to see it from East Road.  On Friday Pete and I will be down on those dikes surveying, so we will certainly be looking for it.

As I sit at my laptop, an email popped up that a birder has found a Hudsonian godwit at Knox this morning!!

ENJOY, be respectful and safe.
