We surveyed Tschache and May’s Point Pools yesterday. May’s was quiet in the open water areas, but I’m pretty sure there are ducks out of sight, back in the cattails.

Tschache had 7 species of ducks that we could detect, the trumpeter swan family with all 6 cygnets and Canada geese. There were lots of double crested cormorants, pied-billed grebes, American coots and common gallinules. We still had a few very young pied-billed grebes and American coots. If I ignore the signs of autumn, fall asters and maple leaves in bright colors, and think logically, I know that the youngsters still have time to finish maturing before they need to migrate. We only saw 6 great blue herons and did not see any great egrets.  Tschache Pool water is quite high and it seems that those species prefer less water like what we have at Knox-Marsellus Marsh.

Yesterday after I left the Refuge, someone spotted two red-necked phalaropes in the Main Pool near the Seneca Spillway!! RATS!! I missed them again

ENJOY, be respectful and safe.
