Last Friday evening through Saturday was the 27th Annual Montezuma Muckrace. We had 40 teams and 168 participants out on the Montezuma Wetlands Complex for 24 hours searching for as many different species of birds as could be found. Despite a LOT of mosquitoes and rain on Saturday morning I believe a fine time was had by all. The winning competitive team had 130 species!! A more detailed report will be posted soon.
My team, The Fellowship of the Wing had a great time. One of our highlights was that we were extremely fortunate to have a 3 owl Muckrace!! On Friday night we heard a screech owl and a little later barred owls communicating!! (The barred owls were a life bird for me!!) VERY early Saturday morning we heard a great horned owl. Woohoo!! Maybe I should have said, Hoot Who!!
I noticed on Monday and again yesterday, that there seem to be more ducks in some of our units! That is awesome, but it also signals that we are approaching Autumn. And I’m not sure I am ready to give up summer quite so soon.
Hopefully, you can get out soon to explore and experience all the amazing things at the Montezuma Wetlands Complex trails, towers and the Refuge Wildlife Drive. Remember, the Refuge Wildlife Drive is currently open to vehicles only. Dogs on a leash are only allowed in and around the Visitors’ Center and on the parts of the Seneca Trail that are open.
