The Main Pool looks like the sky opened-up and rained ducks and geese!! Woohoo, there were thousands out there!! May’s Point seems to be the current shorebird hotspot. However, they were difficult to see as they were hanging out in the cattail stubble. I’m sure it was for their own safety, but it sure was frustrating trying to locate and identify those rascals! We had some cool raptors there as well. There was a pair of adult bald eagles, a Northern harrier, an immature bald eagle and a merlin. I suspect the merlin was checking out the shorebird lunch specials. Knox-Marsellus, from East Road, gave us some great looks at sandhill cranes.  Most could be seen from the overlook, but some were tucked away in the taller vegetation to the southeast.

This Saturday, October 19, Pete is going to continue his guided nature walks at the Visitors’ Center at 10:00 am. The weather forecast looks good so, if you haven’t participated yet, this weekend could be fantastic for a walk at the Refuge. Hopefully, you can get out to explore and experience the Autumn grandeur and the awesome, magical migration at the Montezuma Wetlands Complex trails, towers and the Refuge Wildlife Drive.
