Dismal, wet and cold describes the conditions for our survey yesterday. We did however have enthusiastic, fun company as Alyssa, from the MAC, joined us. There were at least 9 species of ducks at Knox-Marsellus Marsh. Many were in vegetation and quite close together, making them difficult to count. I was surprised that we didn’t see any yellowlegs or dowitchers. There was a flock of about 20 dunlin that flew around, but that’s all in the way of shorebirds. We had a few tundra swans mixed in with the trumpeters, our first of the fall migration. Our beloved sandhill cranes made an impressive showing.
We did not survey the Main Pool yesterday, but it currently holds thousands of ducks!! There are lots of dabblers and divers out there as well as coots and a couple of pied-billed grebes.
I didn’t get any photos yesterday but I am including some from my quick survey Monday morning before I opened the Visitors’ Center.

Sandhill cranes at Know-Marsellus Marsh.
ENJOY, be respectful and safe.
