We had the most wonderful weather day for our survey yesterday! Temperatures were moderate and comfortable. It was breezy, but that probably helped keep the mosquitoes away. I’m all for that!!
The Visitors’ Center Wetland had a good mix of waterfowl and shorebirds. The Main Pool has lots of ducks but it helps to have an eagle or harrier do a flyover to get them up out of the vegetation! The good news is that there are lots of harriers and eagles around that do just that. On Monday, an adult bald eagle was perched on one of the stumps in an area near the eagle sculpture. Seneca Flats had some Canada geese, ducks and shorebirds. We didn’t see the ibis yesterday, but I got a video of it eating on Monday morning at the north end of the unit. I hope to get the video posted on the website soon. Knox-Marsellus is getting drier and many species like ducks and pied billed grebes have moved over to Puddler. However, Knox still had hundreds of Canada geese and dozens of sandhill cranes and great egrets. A peregrine falcon continued to keep the shorebirds on the move there. I’m including a picture of an egret resting, stretched out on the ground at Knox. Shortly after I started taking pictures, of course, it got up and moved. At least I got one picture of it.
Be sure to sign up for the Refuge’s Walk for the Wild event then post your progress! Hope to see you at the Friends’ Annual Meeting on Saturday, October 16 from 1 – 3 PM at the Montezuma Audubon Center.
ENJOY, be respectful and safe.
