I was unable to survey yesterday, so the most up-to-date bird info I have is from last Monday. I usually just post that at the VC desk but thought I would share it here this time. As Autumn marches toward winter, we are still able to enjoy oodles of ducks, geese, swans and sandhill cranes (Pete reported 323 cranes in VC Wetland 11/26/24) as well as many bald eagles and other raptors around the Wetlands Complex. Our 2024 season is rapidly coming to an end, Saturday, November 30 is Pete’s last guided walk for the year. Meet at the Visitors’ Center at 10 am. Many, many thanks to Pete for sharing his vast knowledge of the natural world with our visitors!! On Sunday, December 1, the Visitors’ Center and Wildlife Drive will close until April 1, 2025. The Visitors’ Center deck will be open as weather allows. The outdoor restrooms at the head of the Seneca Trail will remain open through the winter. Keep in mind that the path may not be cleared if we get snow. While the Esker Brook and South Spring Pool trails will remain closed through January 1 (reopening January 2), the Seneca Trail will be open – even during the late archery season for white-tailed deer (12/9/24 – 12/17/24 & 12/26/24 – 1/1/25).
Hopefully, you can get out soon to explore and experience the magnificent, magical migration at the Montezuma Wetlands Complex trails, towers and the Refuge Wildlife Drive (through Nov 30).
