We were quite surprised when Linda B. found a late migrant Killdeer yesterday on the Tschache Pool service road!! A little way further along the road I found two pileated woodpeckers on an ash tree. I was able to get a pic of one of them. I am still unable to explain why there were so few ducks at Tschache again. The good news is that there were a few thousand ducks on the Main Pool. Many could be seen from the Seneca Trail tower and some were viewed from the Wildlife Drive. I am including a pic from the Wildlife Drive of the mostly ring-necked ducks that were so densely packed, they looked like a black streak out in the marsh! We didn’t see any unusual geese anywhere, but there were lots of Canada geese in the Visitors’ Center Wetland in the early afternoon. Early Monday morning I found more than 50 sandhill cranes on the north Puddler dike. At first there were only about 20 and by the time I did a quick check of Knox, 30 more had joined them!
The Visitors’ Center will be closed on Thursday, November 25 for Thanksgiving. It will reopen on Friday and should be open every day through November 30. There will be a survey on Friday, November 26 and bird lists will be posted in the Visitors’ Center. I will not be posting on the Friends’ website this weekend. I hope you have a wonderful, yummy and safe Thanksgiving!!
ENJOY, be respectful and safe.

Thank you
Happy Thanksgiving
Looks like the Pileated is going for some Emerald Ash borer lunch.
