It was a “lifer” for me – the barnacle goose that showed up in the Visitors’ Center Wetland yesterday.  It spent a good part of the day there and was reported to be back there again this morning! By the time Pete and I completed our survey and got back to the VC yesterday morning, it had settled in and was taking a nap. RATS!! My pictures did not show the bird well, so Mark Miller graciously shared a couple of his pics that I could use. One of his pictures shows both the barnacle goose and the cackling goose that was hanging around with it. What a treat for visitors!! Great photos Mark, thanks!

I was surprised that our duck numbers were so low at Tschache Pool. I’m not sure if the high water is keeping them away, if the many days with southerly winds has kept birds up north or if there is yet another reason for it. Feel free to chime in here if you have any knowledge of this, as I would welcome any information.

The other day I received a bulletin from New York State DEC about access to Howland Island. Here is the link:

Remember, that deer hunting with guns opened up this morning.  Please be extra careful, especially when driving, as deer will be on the move, perhaps running and not paying attention to roads and vehicles.

ENJOY, be respectful and safe.
