I knew the ducks would return to Tschache Pool but did not expect to see such an increase yet! Most species had increased in number since last Friday. Linda B spotted a snow bunting, just one, on the service road.
A Ross’s goose has been hanging out mostly in the Visitors’ Center Wetland since Monday. It is often near a snow goose which makes a wonderful comparison of the two species! From late morning through the afternoon the VC Wetland is a “hot spot” for ducks and geese. There are usually a couple of thousand and you can’t hear yourself think when you are on the deck!! Sometimes it gets particularly loud when hundreds of geese come in. Some will choose the VC Wetland and drop into the mix. Others continue on to the Main Pool. It really is a wonderful sound, that for me brings back childhood memories of watching lines and “Vees” of geese migrating in autumn.
Overall, water levels in most of the units have decreased. Yet, the best place to see the waterfowl in the Main Pool is from the Seneca Trail tower. Even though the water level has gone down, the water near the Wildlife Drive is still quite deep. That doesn’t seem to bother the coots though. They have been enjoying the vegetation along the edge next to the Drive. The Seneca Trail is still under water along the Seneca-Cayuga Canal. Access to the floating dock is also under water.
ENJOY, be respectful and safe.
