FYI: masks are now required in the Visitors’ Center due to the high COVID rate in Seneca County. Actually, it appears that currently, NYS has many counties with high rates.
The Visitors’ Center Wetland was the shorebird “hotspot” yesterday!! There were yellowlegs, least sandpipers, killdeer and over 70 dunlin!! Woohoo!! The Main Pool had a bunch of ducks, some shorebirds and an amazing raptor drama. For several minutes Pete and I watched as a bald eagle relentlessly chased an osprey, round and round and round, high up in the air over the Main Pool. The osprey seemed a little more agile and could change direction faster than the eagle. We think the eagle eventually “ran out of steam” or lost interest and gave up the chase.
We did not have the ibis mojo. People saw them before we got there and people saw them after we went through, but we did not see the ibises!! RATS!! But they were seen in Larue’s Lagoon. They were reported in Guy’s Marsh on Thursday.
There were two snow geese in the grassland area east, (across the Wildlife Drive), of Eaton Marsh. Last Monday I saw three but we only saw two yesterday. One of them was walking with a bit of a limp. I don’t know if they can fly. Last year we had 4 snow geese hanging out in the Seneca Flats area for weeks. Maybe this is a trend like the flock that hangs out in Seneca Lake State Park for the summer.
The ducks that we could see at Knox-Marsellus Marsh, from the East Road Overlook, were close to the western edge, until two adult bald eagles flew low over the marsh!! Before they flew and after they resettled, I was able to identify them with my scope.
I didn’t have many photo ops but I am including a pic of one of the snow geese and a huge flock of great blue herons that we encountered at Tschache Pool.
The forecast is for a pleasant and mostly rain-free weekend, so I hope you can get out to explore some of the trails, towers and Wildlife Drive in the Wetlands Complex!!
ENJOY, be respectful and safe.
