I saw the sandhill crane family on Monday morning on the west side of the Wildlife Drive across from Seneca Flats. I am including a picture of the colt who has grown substantially. It is no longer a fuzzy little chick but more like a teenager! Kids grow so quickly!! I couldn’t get a picture of the family because the adults were WAY north of the colt. I could not get them all in the same picture. I guess our little one is getting more independent. On Tuesday the was together on the east side of the Drive in Seneca Flats. Also in Seneca Flats I found 2 broods of wood ducks with their moms. I am including a pic of the group with 6 ducklings. Seneca Flats is about to burst with the most amazing blue/purple flowers called pickerel weed. I am including a picture to showcase these beautiful native plants.

The only unusual birds I saw were 6 yellowlegs. One greater and 5 lesser in the Main Pool on Tuesday. I tried to get some pictures, but it was cloudy and the lighting was really poor.

Large numbers of black terns are still foraging over the cattails at Tschache Pool. There were over 200 mallard ducks at Van Dyne Spoor Road (Sandhill Crane Unit) and over 500 at Knox-Marsellus Marsh (East Road).

I saw a male northern harrier over the Main Pool along I-90 being pursued and harassed by several red-winged black birds. The 2 eaglets are still in the Maple Island nest, a trumpeter swan was slogging through the shallow water near the spillway and there was a single sandhill crane north of the water near the spillway both Monday and Tuesday. We may not have huge numbers of birds but we still have COOL birds.

ENJOY!
Jackie 🙂
