I apologize for the messy appearance of the next to the last column on the bird list. The numbers on the left are from Van Dyne Spoor Road/Sandhill Crane Unit and the numbers on the right are from Knox-Marsellus Marsh. We saw a pair of sandhill cranes down in Knox and watched for a good long time to see if they had a colt. They appear to be without any young. Optics are needed to get a good look at most of the birds in Knox. The nursery brood of Canada Geese on the Main Pool seem to be intact and may be larger. Pete counted 23 goslings and noted it is getting hard to distinguish some of the older ones from the adults. A snow goose continues to hang out with the Canada geese near the spillway.
Yesterday was the day of the American bittern for us! Neither of us had seen one yet this season and there were three. One in Eaton Marsh, and the other two were seen along the Wildlife Drive across from Benning Marsh. Sorry, I have no pictures of them. But I did get a picture of a common gallinule with three babies in one of the water areas along I-90. Both eaglets are still on the nest at Maple Island (pic included).
The black terns are “stealing the show” at Tschache Pool. Dozens and dozens of them are foraging and calling over the cattails. Sometimes there would be 5 or 6 in my scope view!! I tried to get a picture of a group of them but they are way too fast for my inexperienced photo skills. I am including a pic of one black tern that I was able to get while trying to get a group picture.
Be safe,
Jackie 🙂
