With no rain and much better visibility I was able to see both eaglets on the Maple Island nest yesterday. The Clark’s Ridge and 31 Muck south nests both had 2 eaglets also. All are large, dark brown and preparing to fledge!

The units around the Wildlife Drive were quiet but I think we will soon see common gallinule babies! While at Tschache Pool we saw pied-billed grebe and American coot babies. We have been seeing adult common gallinules in Seneca Flats, the part of the Main Pool along I-90, May’s Point and the eastern end of Van Dyne Spoor Road (Sandhill Crane Unit). There were also pied-billed grebes at May’s Point and the eastern end of Van Dyne Spoor Road. But we didn’t see any babies last Tuesday.

Some of the most exciting sights and sounds at Montezuma right now are the black terns from the Tschache Pool tower!! There are dozens foraging over the cattails. If you want to learn what they sound like, it is easy to watch, listen and learn from the tower!! This is a wonderful opportunity to enjoy the Refuge!!
