A wood stork has been seen from the East Road Overlook in the south western part of Knox-Marsellus Marsh. We saw a pair of ring-necked pheasants just below the East Road overlook (pic included). I haven’t seen a hen pheasant in many years. I would guess with all the ruckus out there with the wood stork those guys have moved to a quieter location.
The swamp rose-mallow or rose mallow, a member of the hibiscus family, is making a showy presence along the Wildlife Drive and other locations (pic included). Some of the “sea of green” that you see in the Main Pool is smartweed that will provide seed for the migrating ducks this fall (pic included).
There is lots to experience at Montezuma. Come on out, respect the birds and enjoy!
Jackie 🙂

Hi, Jackie. I’m as thrilled as you to see a hen pheasant. Oh, if only she/they can survive, have a family & not be taken by predators, 2 & 4 legged.
I have seen spoonbills & a wood stork in FL so not terribly distressed that I’m not able to get away to see them here. What a thrill it would have been for LaRue.
Miss seeing you. How many yrs. have you been at MNWR?
