As expected, Linda and Pete encountered few birds again. They did see the sandhill crane family in Larue’s Lagoon, really close to the Wildlife Drive! They found a smattering of shorebirds in the Main Pool and Larue’s Lagoon. The black and Caspian terns and ring-billed gull numbers have increased in the Main Pool. Knox-Marsellus, viewed from the East Road Overlook, had a large number of great blue herons, great egrets and a few sandhill cranes. If it plays out as it has in the past, there should be more and more there as summer progresses. On East Road they got a picture of an osprey nest with a chick!! They also sent me pictures of cone flower, evening primrose and the magnificent pickerelweed.
My weather app shows that the Finger Lakes is having a bit of a cool down for a couple of days. Hopefully, you can get out soon to explore and experience all the amazing things at the Montezuma Wetlands Complex trails, towers and the Refuge Wildlife Drive. Remember, the Refuge Wildlife Drive is now open to hikers and cyclists as well as cars. Dogs on a leash are only allowed in and around the Visitors’ Center and on the Seneca Trail.
ENJOY, be respectful and safe.
