Holy cow, here it is September 1st!! Where did the summer go? Our hiking trails are less birdy and more buggy as many of our summer birds have left and others are staging for their southward migration.  Without the large number of insectivorous birds around we have noticed a huge increase in mosquitoes (sad face)!!  We also see it at our house since the 10 pairs of barn swallows have taken their fledglings and left our yard! What’s annoying is that those birds are about 1/10 of a mile down the road on the electric lines!! I don’t get it, we have electric lines in front of our house.

You will notice on the list that we had larger numbers of ducks on the Main Pool yesterday. We had some help. While we were surveying, the biologist was checking out something in the area via kayak. She happened to flush some ducks that we couldn’t see, except for the 85 mallards we saw from the Seneca Trail tower (thanks to her paddling). I told you they were out there in the vegetation.

Knox-Marsellus Marsh continues to be the “hot spot” with good visibility, albeit distant, of birds.  The sandhill crane number was up to 25 yesterday. We did not see the spoonbill yesterday, but I am including a sequence of photos that Rick Greene took Monday evening from East Road. (There is an order, look for the 01, 02 & 03 at the end of each title. These are best viewed on a larger screen.) It seems the spoonbill may have gotten into a turf war with an egret.

BYOB: Bring your own bug spray and have fun with the cooler temperatures this week.

ENJOY, be respectful and safe!
