I did an educational program yesterday and Pete kindly filled in for me to help Linda with the survey. Thanks, Pete!! The southern end of the Visitors’ Center Wetland remains the shorebird “hot spot”. They had a good diversity of species and numbers of birds there. The Main Pool had a HUGE number of mallards (almost 2500) and a few other duck species. Tschache Pool had the largest number of great egrets, 138, while the Main Pool only had 6. But, by the time I left yesterday afternoon there was 1 great egret in the north end of the VC Wetland!
Linda got a picture of an immature bald eagle with its wings out. We were not sure if it was trying to cool off or dry off. I am also including a picture of an adult bald eagle in the spillway tree that I took Monday morning. I also noticed that the pickerel weed was still blooming in Seneca Flats. It has been magnificent all summer!!
A week from Friday, on September 9 – 10 is the annual Montezuma Muckrace, a 24-hour birding extravaganza!! If you are not on a team, feel free to support a team with a $$ donation. All monies go to assist the Refuge, DEC and Audubon projects and activities.
Hopefully, you can get out to explore and experience all the amazing things at the Montezuma Wetlands Complex trails, towers and the Refuge Wildlife Drive. The Wildlife Drive is no longer open to hikers and cyclists. It’s just cars until May 25, 2023. Dogs on a leash are only allowed in and around the Visitors’ Center and on the Seneca Trail.
ENJOY, be respectful and safe.
