I didn’t survey yesterday because I led a youth program with Victor Parks and Rec at the Refuge. It was a great group of kids and I always enjoy providing a program for them. Janet filled in for the survey again. Thanks, Janet! There have been daily eBird reports of the American avocet seen from East Road at Knox-Marsellus Marsh. There have also been many great egrets, usually over 100, at Knox as well. Otherwise, we are seeing our usual birds for this time of year; a mix of shorebirds and increasing numbers of ducks.
A week from Friday, September 6, is the Friends’ Annual Muckrace fund raiser. You can still register a team and/or donate to a team. You can go to:
friendsofmontezuma.org/projects-programs/muckrace
To donate, you can choose a team from the drop-down menu and choose the amount you want to give. (FYI: my team is the Fellowship of the Wing, in case you are interested)
On Saturday, September 21 the Friends’ is sponsoring our second Annual Native Plant Festival and Sale at the Refuge. There is a guided nature walk with Pete at 8:00am and the other activities begin at 9:00am. We have a wonderful line up of speakers and vendors. We also have some great items for our raffle.
Pete has another guided walk on Saturday, August 31 to explore the myriad interconnections between the living and non-living components of our environment. Walks are free; no sign-ups necessary; and begin at 10am at the Visitor Center. Hope to see you there.

Hopefully, you can get out soon to explore and experience all the amazing things at the Montezuma Wetlands Complex trails, towers and the Refuge Wildlife Drive. Remember, the Refuge Wildlife Drive is currently open to vehicles only. Dogs on a leash are only allowed in and around the Visitors’ Center and on the parts of the Seneca Trail that are open.
