Overall, we had low numbers of birds today. Waterfowl most likely have moved further north or into the cattails (mallards) and trees (wood ducks and hooded mergansers) to nest. I think it is safe to say the bulk of our shorebirds haven’t arrived yet. Historically, May is a month when we get larger numbers of shorebirds on their northward migration. We have been getting a smattering of shorebirds for a few weeks, but no large scale influx yet. We did have a few dunlin and yellowlegs in the Visitors’ Center Wetland as well as the glossy ibis this morning. We did see, my first of the year, black terns foraging over the Main Pool!! I absolutely love to watch their flight patterns! Pete saw two eaglets in the nest, east of Benning Marsh. I didn’t see them, but I believe Pete!
In addition to the ibis, I am including pictures of a Canada goose still on a nest, a pied-billed grebe, a pair of gadwall, and a great blue heron all in the Main Pool. The last picture is of two Caspian terns in the VC Wetland.
Hopefully, you can get out soon to explore and experience all the amazing things at the Montezuma Wetlands Complex trails, towers and the Refuge Wildlife Drive. Remember, the Refuge Wildlife Drive is currently open to vehicles only. Dogs on a leash are only allowed in and around the Visitors’ Center and on the Seneca Trail.
ENJOY, be respectful and safe.
