We opted to switch our survey from Tuesday to Wednesday this week due to the prediction of inclement weather for Tuesday. That was a good choice since we enjoyed a mostly sunny, yet windy and cool day with no precipitation! We found small numbers of waterfowl in the units surveyed. It appears that the bulk of them have moved on. I am including a picture of a Canada goose in May’s Point Pool on a muskrat mound that must be incubating eggs. I think it is trying to be inconspicuous. You be the judge! I took the other picture of a goose from the Wildlife Drive on Easter Sunday morning after a snow squall. Some of the geese have been hunkered down on muskrat mounds for a while, so I think we should be seeing fluffy, yellow goslings pretty soon.

Another picture is of a pair of buffleheads that were in May’s Point Pool. And the last picture is of some of the great blue heron nests as seen from the Tschache Pool Tower. I got a report that someone found great horned owls using one of the heron nests.  I tried to get a picture to share but my pictures and others I have seen don’t show the owls clearly. I hope someone is able to get a good picture for us.

On Friday, Pete and Linda will survey and post lists in the Visitors’ Center. The weather is predicted to be warmer and drier this weekend so I hope you can get out and experience the trails, towers and/or the Wildlife Drive.

ENJOY, be respectful and safe.
