Yesterday we started our survey from the Seneca Trail Tower. Before we even got to the top, we could see several immature bald eagles flying around in the southern end of the Main Pool. From the top we found 6 immature bald eagles either standing on the ground or flying around stirring up mostly green-winged teal. Along the Wildlife Drive near the spillway, a great egret was still hanging out in the tree between the Drive and the Seneca-Cayuga Canal. We saw our first of the season Caspian tern checking out the Main Pool. We saw two others over at May’s Point a little later as well.
The Maple Island and May’s Point eagle nests each had an adult standing on the edge appearing to tend to chicks. I haven’t seen any chicks over the top edge of any nests yet. I will certainly let you know when I do!!
I’m including a pic of the egret in the tree that I took the other day and one of a couple of trumpeter swans that were in Eaton Marsh. The swan pic shows the “V” that the top of the bill makes that many folks refer to when distinguishing trumpeters from tundras. It is REALLY hard to see when they are feeding as they don’t take their heads out of the water for very long and it seems they seldom are directly facing you when they do.
The purple martins are back at the Visitors’ Center!! It is wonderful to hear them chortling and chattering once again. We were lucky yesterday to have lovely weather. But it is going to be challenging today to view birds with periods of rain and sometimes snow flurries. Tomorrow’s forecast seems better with way less chance of rain and no snow predicted. I hope you can get out to the trails, towers, or Wildlife Drive soon.
ENJOY, be respectful and safe.
