Linda and I had a very pleasant day at the Refuge yesterday. Most of all it wasn’t windy so it felt cool but not cold!! And the few times the sun peeked out from behind the clouds it was warm. The Main Pool had a good diversity of ducks. There were still several hundred canvasbacks that can be seen from the Wildlife Drive. We had one tundra swan still hanging out in Seneca Flats. Most of the green-winged teal were seen from the Seneca Trail Tower. They were out in the southern part of the Main Pool that can’t be seen from the Wildlife Drive. However, there were plenty of green-wings, blue-winged teals and northern shovelers in the Visitors’ Center Wetland. They could be seen from the driveway and the observation deck. For the past several days I have seen a doe and what appears to be a yearling grazing on the dike on the backside of the Visitors’ Center Wetland. From the VC observation deck you can hear western chorus frogs, northern leopard frogs and peepers!! Those frogs can also be heard in other places around the Refuge. Challenge yourself to listen for them in various locations!! I will include a couple of charts I use to help identify those guys.

The Visitors’ Center is open and staffed by volunteers daily from 10 AM – 3 PM.

ENJOY, be respectful and safe.
